Double Glazing Repairs in Rochester and Medway: Repair or Replace?

Short answer: should you repair or replace your double glazing?

If your frame is sound and only the glass has failed (misting between the panes, a cracked pane, a worn handle or a stiff hinge), repairing is almost always cheaper than replacing the whole window. A misted sealed unit cannot be “resealed” in any lasting way, so the fix is a new glass unit in your existing frame. Replace the whole window when the frame itself is warped, rotten, draughty or beyond sensible repair.

What does “double glazing repair” actually cover?

A double glazing repair is any fix that restores a window or door without replacing the entire frame. In homes across Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham, the jobs we see most often are:

  • Blown or misted glass: condensation or fogging trapped between the two panes because the edge seal has failed.
  • Cracked or broken glass: from impact, thermal stress or a failed unit.
  • Faulty mechanisms and handles: windows that will not lock, or doors that will not lift and latch.
  • Worn or snapped hinges: windows that drop, rub on the frame or will not close fully.
  • Perished seals and gaskets: draughts and rattling around the sash.

Each of these is a specific part failing. Fixing that part keeps a good frame in service, which is why we always look at repair before suggesting anything bigger.

What is blown double glazing and why does it happen?

A double glazed unit is two panes of glass sealed around the edge with a gap between them. “Blown” glass simply means that edge seal has failed, letting moist air in. You see it as a misty film or droplets that no amount of wiping will remove, because the moisture is inside the unit. Typical causes include age, poor original installation, frames sitting in standing water, and units exposed to heavy sun or constant damp. Once the seal has gone, the insulating gap no longer does its job, so the window loses thermal performance as well as clarity.

Can blown double glazing be repaired without replacing the glass?

Not properly. Some firms advertise drilling and defogging, but the seal is still compromised and the misting tends to return. The reliable fix is to measure the existing unit and fit a new sealed glass unit into the frame you already have. Your handles, hinges and frame stay as they are, so you avoid the cost and mess of a full window replacement. You can see how we handle this on our blown glass repair page and our glass replacement page.

How much does double glazing repair cost in Kent?

Prices vary by size, glass type and how easy the window is to reach. As a national guide, MyBuilder puts replacement of a blown unit at roughly £150 to £400 for smaller units and £400 to £800 for large or bay units, with labour typically 1 to 3 hours per window. Treat that as a rough range only. Our approach is a free property visit, then a fixed-price quote. The price we quote is the price you pay, with no hidden extras.

How long does a repair take?

Most single-window glass or hardware repairs take a few hours on site. Handles, hinges and mechanisms are often done in one visit. A replacement sealed unit is made to measure, so there is a short wait for manufacture before fitting day. Many standard window or door installations can be completed within a single day, while whole-property installations, conservatories and roof lanterns take longer. Disruption for a repair is minimal: we need clear access to the window, and you should move curtains, blinds and ornaments away beforehand.

When is it time to replace the whole window?

Replace rather than repair when:

  • the frame is warped, cracked, or has failed welds or corners;
  • the window is draughty even after seals and hinges are sorted;
  • multiple units in the same house are misting, which usually points to age;
  • you want better performance, security or noise reduction than the old frames can deliver.

If you do replace, the choice of glazing matters. Triple glazing can give greater thermal insulation and noise reduction, which we would recommend for homes on busy roads, but for many quieter Medway streets well-specified double glazing is the better value. Our installers advise on the property, your budget and what you need. See our window range and door range.

What about security?

A repair is a chance to improve security, not just fix a fault. Replacement units can be specified with toughened or laminated safety glass, and failing locks and mechanisms can be replaced with multi-point locking hardware. Our composite doors combine materials such as wood, uPVC and glass-reinforced plastic with multi-point locking. If your lock is failing, see our mechanism replacement and hinge replacement services.

Do you cover Rochester, Gillingham and the rest of Medway?

Yes. We are a Kent-based, family-run independent company rather than a national franchise, and we work on homes in Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Sittingbourne, Faversham, Maidstone, Dartford, Gravesend, Ashford and surrounding areas. Older Medway housing, from Victorian terraces near the Medway towns to 1960s and 70s estates, often has original double glazing now reaching the end of its life, so repair-versus-replace is a decision we help with every week.

What to expect when you call a glazing company

  1. Free property visit: we inspect the glass, frame, seals and hardware.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there condensation between my double glazing panes?

The sealed unit’s edge seal has failed and moist air has got in. It cannot be wiped away because the moisture is inside the unit.

Can I just replace the glass and keep my frame?

Yes, provided the frame is straight, sound and the hardware works. A new sealed unit is fitted into the existing frame.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace double glazing?

Replacing a glass unit, handle or hinge is normally much cheaper than a full window. A badly damaged frame makes full replacement the better value.

How long does a double glazing repair take?

Hardware repairs are often done in one visit. Glass units are made to measure, so allow a short lead time before fitting.

Do you repair double glazing in Gillingham, Rochester and Chatham?

Yes, along with Maidstone, Sittingbourne, Gravesend and the wider Kent area.

Is triple glazing worth it?

It can offer greater insulation and noise reduction, mainly worthwhile on busy or noisy roads. Ask us at the free visit.
